At school, PE was my least favourite subject. I spent lessons either standing in front of a Netball hoop, trying to avoid a hockey stick to the shins or praying for the day Cross country would become non-compulsory! As I grew older I would join a gym, go for a while and then stop - either through lack of motivation, understanding of what I was supposed to be doing or just boredom (I am definitely someone who likes variety!
Fast forward several more years (and failed gym memberships later), I had become a Mum (and my body was definitely no longer my own) and had a wedding dress to fit into. I found myself a PT who I worked with for 6 months, he was great - we got the results I was looking for. BUT then he moved away and I was kind of back where I started...
Then in 2017, a friend posted that they had opened a new private gym and were offering PT sessions. Having learned from my last experience that what I needed was someone knowledgeable, experienced and able to guide and encourage me towards moving more - otherwise life would get in the way and I would stop again. But I wanted to be healthier, I wanted to know how to be stronger, I wanted to be able to run around after my young son and have the energy for everything I wanted to do...
I consistently trained with my PT for the next 2-3 years. Yes, that may seem a lot but I kept it up longer than anything else, even on the days when I didn't feel like it, when I was ready to give up - having someone there to be accountable to (as well as to myself), who could encourage, tailor, adapt and drive me was exactly what I needed. I knew then that I wanted to help, encourage and guide others to make positive changes in relation to movement, health & fitness. So I re-trained as a Personal Trainer, started coaching group classes, taking part in Obstacle course races, sea swimming, running (bit of a love/hate scenario there but its a work in progress!) and passing on what I have learnt to my clients and family. I knew how and why I was moving but most importantly how to keep moving.
